Advantech's QCS6490 Module Gets Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Certification

The AOM-2721 Open Standard Module now carries validated Ubuntu 24.04 LTS support, giving edge AI integrators a lower-risk path onto Arm-based Qualcomm silicon.

Advantech has secured Ubuntu 24.04 LTS certification for its AOM-2721, an Open Standard Module (OSM) built around the Qualcomm Dragonwing™ QCS6490 processor. The certification, achieved in collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies and Canonical, confirms that the hardware and software stack have passed formal compatibility and validation testing — not just that the OS boots, but that it is supported and maintained against a known baseline.

For engineers, that distinction matters more than it might appear. Uncertified combinations of embedded hardware and Linux distributions are a common source of late-stage integration pain: driver mismatches, unpredictable kernel updates, and gaps in long-term support that only surface once a product is in the field. Certification removes much of that guesswork, giving development teams a documented, stable baseline to build on and a clearer maintenance path once systems are deployed.

Security and Lifecycle Matter as Much as Performance

The AOM-2721 packs up to 12 TOPS of AI performance into a 45 x 45 mm form factor at just 6.9W TDP, with 5G, Wi-Fi 6, LPDDR5 and UFS support — credible specs for autonomous mobile robots, machine vision, and portable medical devices. But the more consequential detail for procurement teams is the option to add Ubuntu Pro for Devices, which extends security maintenance up to 15 years, with continuous CVE remediation and fleet management tools.

That is a meaningful consideration for anyone specifying hardware for defence, maritime, or critical infrastructure projects, where deployed systems routinely run a decade or more and where unpatched CVEs are not an acceptable operational risk. A certified, long-term-supported OS stack shifts cybersecurity compliance from a project-by-project burden to something closer to a managed service.

A Nordic Angle: Long Deployment Cycles, Higher Scrutiny

Nordic operators in energy, defence and maritime sectors typically run edge and embedded systems well beyond typical commercial refresh cycles, and increasingly face tightening cybersecurity requirements from both national authorities and NATO-aligned procurement standards. A certified Arm-based platform with a documented 15-year security runway is directly relevant to system designers trying to satisfy those requirements without building in-house patching infrastructure from scratch.

For teams migrating from x86 to Arm architectures — a move increasingly driven by power and thermal constraints at the edge — a validated OS/hardware combination also reduces one of the bigger unknowns in that transition: whether the software ecosystem will keep pace with the silicon.

The AOM-2721 is now available with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS support, positioned by Advantech as part of a broader Chip-to-Cloud AIoT platform strategy.
