Axiomtek NA348: Compact 1U Network Appliance Targets Edge Security and SD-WAN Deployments
A desktop-format network appliance built on Intel Atom Amston Lake silicon brings 2.5GbE connectivity, hardware-based security, and cellular expansion to space-constrained edge sites.

Axiomtek has introduced the NA348, a compact 1U desktop network appliance aimed at firewall, SD-WAN, UTM, and secure gateway deployments at the network edge. The unit is built around Intel's Atom x7000RE series (Amston Lake) processors and is positioned as a modernization path for operators replacing legacy edge appliances in telecom, industrial, and smart site environments where rack space and integration complexity are constrained.
The platform is offered with a choice of two processor options: the 2-core Atom x7211RE or the 4-core Atom x7433RE, paired with DDR5-4800 SO-DIMM memory scalable to 16GB. This gives integrators a way to scale compute headroom to the workload — lighter firewall/routing tasks on the dual-core SKU, or heavier packet inspection and SD-WAN processing on the quad-core variant — without changing the chassis or form factor.
Networking and Interface Flexibility
Networking is centered on four 2.5GbE RJ-45 LAN ports as the baseline configuration. Axiomtek offers additional SKUs that swap in two 1GbE RJ-45 ports or two 1GbE SFP ports, letting customers match interface choice to cable distance, fiber requirements, or existing site infrastructure. This SKU-based approach is intended to avoid forcing a single interface configuration on all deployment scenarios.
Built-In Security and Uptime Features
For platform trust, the NA348 includes onboard TPM 2.0, providing a hardware root of trust for system integrity — a baseline requirement increasingly demanded in firewall and gateway hardware. A pair of LAN bypass ports is also built in, allowing network traffic to continue flowing through the appliance during a system fault or scheduled maintenance window, which is a key requirement for always-on edge security infrastructure where an appliance failure shouldn't equal a network outage.
Storage and Wireless Expansion
Despite its compact footprint, the NA348 supports a reasonable storage and connectivity expansion set: one 2.5-inch SATA 3.0 SSD/HDD bay, one M.2 Key M 2242 slot for SSD storage, one M.2 Key E 2230 slot for Wi-Fi, a PCI Express Mini Card slot for LTE modules, and a Nano SIM slot — enabling cellular-backed remote gateway or failover-WAN configurations without external adapters.

Target applications span telecom infrastructure edge nodes, industrial network segmentation, and smart site gateways where a firewall, SD-WAN endpoint, or secure router needs to be deployed outside a traditional data center rack. The combination of 2.5GbE throughput, TPM-based hardware trust, LAN bypass for service continuity, and cellular backhaul expansion addresses several requirements simultaneously in a single compact chassis, reducing the need for separate boxes or add-on modules at constrained sites.
“By combining the new Intel Amston Lake CPU, upgraded networking, trusted security features, and flexible deployment options, the NA348 is built to help customers modernize legacy edge network appliances with a more future-ready platform architecture.” — Mandy Chueh, Product Manager, Axiomtek
For operators and integrators managing distributed firewall or SD-WAN rollouts, the NA348's SKU flexibility on interfaces means procurement teams can standardize on a single chassis design across sites with differing cabling and fiber requirements, simplifying spares management and technician training.
